While that method’s fun, it can be very time-consuming which is why seeking and saving functions are so useful.

This post provides step-by-step instructions on how to scan for pre-set stations and save them easily on your radio or stereo.

The General Process to Set Radio Stations for Most Radios

Before we get a little more specific, let’s talk about what the general process is when you look for radio stations in your area.

The steps to find and set your favorite radio stations on any radio will include:

Step 1: Turn on your radio and select whether you want AM, FM 1, or FM 2. In today’s day and age, AM has become fairly outdated.

Hence, let’s go with FM 1 for now since that’s the most common form of modulation used by most modern radio stations.

Step 2: Scan the FM 1 radio stations in your area by utilizing your radio station’s Seek, Scan, or Search function.

Important note: The name of the function may slightly differ depending on the model and manufacturer of your radio. However, they all work in the same way.
The purpose is to scan the different frequencies to determine which of them are active in your area.
Once the radio detects the different radio stations by conducting this scan, it automatically saves the radio stations for you to choose from.
Once the radio stations are saved, you can easily navigate to them with the help of your radio’s control keys.

Many radio models have numbered keys with a button layout. Typically, with such models, they allow you to save the preset stations onto different numbers.

For example, if you’d like to save your favorite rock radio station to number 1. This will mean that every time you press the “1” key on your radio, it will automatically switch to the rock radio station.

Step 3: The process may differ slightly depending on what radio you have but for most of them with numbered layouts, the process goes something like this:

You navigate to the radio station you want to save and then you save it to a numbered button.

For example, if you want to save a radio station to number 1, then you will navigate to that radio station and press the “1” button for 5 seconds.

Now, every time you press “1”, your radio will navigate to that radio station.

How to Set Radio Stations on Pioneer Radios?

For most Pioneer radios, the process is fairly simple.

Depending on the model, you may have one or more of the following functions to help you find radio stations on your chosen band:

  • Best Stations Memory (BSM): If you apply this function, then your radio will search for frequencies and then, save the top 6 strongest frequencies in its memory. You can then navigate to any of these 6 stations easily any time you want.
  • Local: The Local setting is present in some Pioneer radios and can come in quite handy if you only drive in your local town. This setting works by providing you access to the top local radio stations closest to you.
  • Seek: When it comes to Seek options, you have two modes. The first is Manual which means that you search for radio stations yourself with the control knob. The second is the Preset menu which lets you access previously saved radio stations.

The procedure to change time on Pioneer time is fairly simple. Check out the detailed guide here.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How many presets can I normally have?

It will depend on the model and manufacturer of your radio.

However, most radio manufacturers allow people to usually have at least 6 presets on a single band.

What if I want to overwrite presets?

Yes, you can easily overwrite presets if you’d like to on most radios. The only thing you have to do is to tune your radio to the new radio station you want to save and save it to the preset number of your choice.

If the preset number already has a radio station saved to it, it will be overwritten.

This can sometimes happen with digital radios over time. To fix this, you can clear its memory from its settings menu and save the presets again.

Can I have presets on different bands?

Yes. Most radios allow you to have at least 6 presets on different bands.

What are AM and FM?

AM stands for amplitude modulation and FM stands for frequency modulation. They are two different ways to broadcast radio signals.
